Court rejects Abba Kyari’s bail application

Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the bail application of the suspended deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari who has been in custody since February 14 for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

His counsel, Cynthia Ikenna, had approached the court for bail on health grounds saying he was battling Hypertension and Diabetes and needed to be released so he can receive better treatment in his home.

Delivering judgment in the application today, the judge ruled that the bail application has been overtaken by events following an order of a sister court, granting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)’s prayers to detain Kyari for another 14 days to enable it to conclude its investigation.

The judge, however, said he was inclined to hear Kyari’s fundamental enforcement rights suit with the urgency it deserves after the expiration of the 14-day court order then adjourned until March 15 to hear Kyari’s application to demand for his fundamental right enforcement.
